Maryland House Appropriations Committee Aproves Teacher Pension Shift

As a Maryland House subcommittee considers tax increase, the House Appropriations Committee approved its own version of legislation that requires county governments to pick up half the cost of teacher pensions. Under the House bill, county governments would have to pick up that cost within three years.  The Senate approved the shift within four years.  Governor Martin O'Malley wanted the shift immediately. These are the first of a number of votes the House of Delegates will take on the state budget.  House Majority leader Kumar Barve says the neither the House nor Senate appears interested in the governor’s plan to shift half the teachers pension cost to the counties immediately- as it could prove devastating for local governments…
