Mayor and Council Vote to Raise Additional $1 Million for Rolling Mill

The Cumberland Mayor and City Council voted unanimously this week to raise an additional $1 million for the Rolling Milling urban renewal project, with demolition of properties acquired by the city under the program set to begin next month. Last December city officials voted  to raise $2.5 million, through a bond sale, to fund the Maryland Avenue Redevelopment Project, which calls for the acquisition and demolition of 67 homes and a church in the city’s Rolling Mill neighborhood. The homes are being cleared to transform the area into a commercial site with a national chain restaurant and businesses. With the action taken Tuesday, the city’s allocation increases to $3.5 million. Jeff Rhodes, city administrator, said the expeditious nature of the property acquisitions is what led to the need for additional funds….
