Tensions on Capitol Hill nearly resulted in fisticuffs overnight between Maryland US House member Andy Harris and a representative of Texas.
The pair had to be separated by a Capitol staffer, according to witnesses.
Lawmakers remained on Capitol Hill well after midnight after a long Wednesday that included pro-Trump demonstrators storming the Capitol, forcing members of Congress to barricade themselves for safety until the building could be secured.
Members resumed debating the electoral college results Wednesday. The altercation between Harris, a Republican, and Democratic Representative Colin Allred occurred at approximately 2am Thursday morning.
What prompted the incident wasn’t immediately clear.
Harris, who is Maryland's sole Republican in Congress, was among those who had said he would challenge the certification of the election of Joe Biden as president.
