September 22nd, 2015 by WCBC Radio

On September 21, 2015 at approximately 1134 hours, S/Tpr. Matthew Schoenadel was dispatched to respond to westbound Interstate 68 at the Clarysville Bridge on a report of a male subject standing on the bridge. Upon his arrival, S/Tpr Schoenadel found the male subject standing along lane # 1 and the concrete barrier wall looking straight down over the bridge.  S/Tpr. Schoenadel activated the emergency equipment on his marked patrol vehicle blocking lane one in order to protect the subject from being struck by traffic. S/Tpr. Schoenadel cautiously approached the subject who was obviously distraught and visibly upset.

S/Tpr.Schoenadel began a conversation with the subject and explained that it was okay, he wasn't in any trouble and that he was there to help him.  The subject turned away from S/Tpr. Schoenadel and looked toward the edge of the bridge.  S/Trp. Schoenadel took quick action and aggressively advanced on the subject placing him into protective custody.

The male subject later stated he was, “upset about everything in life and intended on ending his own." The subject had parked his vehicle near a business under the bridge and climbed up the bank to gain access to the bridge deck.  He was transported to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center on an emergency petition.
