Memorial Campus Demolition Planned; Not Official

January 3rd, 2013 by WCBC Radio

Although no formal vote has been taken, a funding package to secure at least $5 million to finance the demolition of the old Memorial Hospital structure is moving forward. The city estimates that demolition of the old hospital would cost $3.5 million. Memorial Hospital sits on an eight-acre tract. The four acres that make up the southern portion hold the hospital and parking garage. The northern four acres hold the medical offices. The proposed demolition is for the southern tract that holds the hospital and parking garage only. The northern tract will remain as is, according to council plans. Mayor Brian Grim says the decision, which again is not final, was made after a private commercial effort failed to prove successful. Maintaining the building alone is costing the city a considerable amount annually.

I think it is a shame that the old Memorial couldn’t be used as a VA hospital.

Has anybody asked the Mayor if a VA hospital was even considered?
