Mikulski conducts College Affordability Summit in Cumberland

October 14th, 2014 by WCBC Radio

U.S. Sen. Barbara Mikulski visited Allegany College of Maryland Wednesday to  promote her ideas for making higher education more affordable. The Maryland Democrat launched what she calls her "college affordability tour" in September. She's promoting a bill that would enable students or college graduates who took out loans before 2010 to refinance those loans at today's low interest rate. Mikulski says the heavy burden of student loan debt puts the future of young graduates and the U.S. economy at risk. Addressing students as well as administrators from Frostburg State University, Allegany College and Garrett Community College- the state’s senior senator pledged to continue to fight to see that the proposed legislation becomes a reality.

In addition to students, the forum was attended by: Cynthia S. Bambara, President, Allegany College of Maryland; Jonathan Gibralter, President, Frostburg State University;

Julie Yoder, Dean of Continuing Education and Workforce Development, Garrett College; Nicole Christian, President, Garrett County Chamber of Commerce and Stu Czapski, Executive Director, Allegany County Chamber of Commerce
