Mizeur’s Campaign Overshadowed by ‘Fracking’ Ban Efforts

July 18th, 2013 by WCBC Radio

Montgomery County Delegate Heather Mizeur is making good on her promise, and is kicking off a campaign for the Democratic nomination for governor. Mizeur kicked off her campaign Wednesday. Her campaign stops include an appearance at the Tawes Crab and Clam Bake in Crisfield, which is an annual event that draws many Maryland politicians and candidates. Mizeur is seeking to become the first woman governor in state history, and the first openly gay governor in the nation. Mizeur was a House sponsor of Maryland's same sex marriage legislation that was approved by lawmakers and then voters last year. The delegate will face a difficult challenge trying to generate support in Allegany and Garrett counties. Not only is the far western part of the state consist of some of the more  conservative voters, but the majority party is republican. In addition, she didn’t make many friends when she led the effort to ban natural gas fracking in Western Maryland. Allegany County Commissioner Bill Valentine says fracking has proven to be environmentally safe, but it would provide a tremendous new revenue stream for the region.
