Mother of State Senator George Edwards passes at age of 102

Stella (DiValentino) Edwards, 102, of Grantsville, passed away Monday, Aug. 13, 2018, of natural causes at the Goodwill Mennonite Home, Grantsville, where she was a resident.

Born May 5, 1916, in Meyersdale, Pa., she was the daughter of the late Valentino and Angela Marie (Dichesere) DiValentino. She was also preceded in death by her husband, C. Clayton Edwards; one daughter, Donna Edwards Selby; five sisters, Frances Dirienzo, Nellie Cuozzo, Rose Hauser, Liberty Myers and Gloria Nyheim; and one brother, Galileo DiValentino.

Stella was a graduate of Meyersdale High School and resided in Grantsville after marrying her late husband, Clayton. She was the Grantsville Elementary school cafeteria manager prior to retiring after 25 years as an employee of the Garrett County Board of Education. Preceding her employment with the school, she managed several Edwards' restaurants in the Grantsville area. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Grantsville, as well as being active in the Republican Women's Club, Fireman's auxiliary, American Legion auxiliary and Casselman Valley Homemaker's Club. She loved being with her family and friends, having fun playing games, and attending her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren's many activities. An avid sports fan, she was also a great cook and enjoyed baking and cooking.

She is survived by one son, George C. Edwards and wife, Linda, Grantsville; one daughter, Sheila Edwards and husband, Dr. Donald Richter, Hagerstown; three granddaughters, Kristin Edwards Slagle and husband, Mike, Swanton, Katie Richter and husband, Daniel Moore, Alexandria, Va., Allison Cleman and husband, Jeremiah, Annapolis; two grandsons, Mike Selby and wife, Jennifer, Annapolis; Paul C. Edwards and wife, Emily, Grantsville; eight great-grandchildren, Samantha Edwards, Emma Edwards, Nathan Selby, Clayton Selby, Brady Spotts, Alexis Spotts, Stella Edwards and Abigail Richter-Moore; and one sister, Georgina Solt and husband, David, Philadelphia, Pa.

The family would like to thank the staff at Goodwill Mennonite Home for the excellent care Stella received during her stay.

Friends will be received at the Newman Funeral Homes, P.A., 179 Miller St., Grantsville, on Thursday, Aug.16 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Funeral services will be conducted in the funeral home on Friday, Aug.17, 2018, at 11a.m. Interment will be in the Grantsville Cemetery.
