North/South Corridor Highlights Busy Year for GCC

Although 2012 has been a busy year with a myriad of projects for the The Greater Cumberland Committee- continued progress on the North/South Corridor project stands out as a highlight. The North/South Appalachian Highway Coalition met earlier this month and GCC executive director Brenda Smith said that helping push through federal the Surface Transportation Bill represents major progress on a project that been discussed for several decades. The $10-million plus bill, which was passed by the House of Representatives, allows for the completion of the Somerset-Meyersdale stretch of U.S. Route 219. The measure included much sought-after repeal of language preventing Pennsylvania from using toll credits it has accumulated as its $35 million share of the $350 million cost of completing the link.
