Allegany County Animal Control seized 97 cats from Charm City Animal Rescue on Naves Crossroads, Cumberland and the home of Michelle Ingrodi on Thursday, December 29 and Friday, December 30. Ninety-seven counts of neglect have been filed against Ms. Ingrodi by the Animal Control Officer after consulting with the State’s Attorney’s Office. The cats are now at the Allegany County Animal Shelter.
“Right now, we are in crisis mode,” commented Tina Rafferty, Executive Director of the shelter. “When you get that many animals at one time, it puts a strain on the shelter’s finances, as well as, the staff. We do not euthanize for space and we’re working in a shelter designed to be a high kill shelter.” The Allegany County Animal Shelter is the first, and only one of two no-kill municipal shelters in the state of Maryland.
“We couldn’t operate if it were not for the incredible help of our community,” Rafferty added. “This community has shown that they support our efforts to remain a no-kill shelter.”
‘This is the third large emergency we have had in the last three years at the shelter. And while it’s our responsibility to take in these animals and care for them, it exceeds our budgeted resources,” commented Becky McClarran, President of the ACAS Management Foundation. In 2015, the shelter took in 33 dogs from a hoarding situation and last year, a local puppy mill bust was made with numerous animals including a variety of dog breeds.
Monetary donations for vet care and donations of dry and wet cat food, cleaning supplies such as HD laundry detergent, bleach and dishwashing liquid, and blankets and towels are needed. Items may be dropped off at the shelter located at 716 Furnace Street, Cumberland or at Barkin’ Basement Thrift Shop, Virginia Avenue Liquors and Coney Pizza in Lonaconing.
