O’Rourke Receives NAVSEA Award

July 18th, 2012 by WCBC Radio

Colleen O'Rourke, formerly of Cumberland, was recently recognized for communications excellence by the Navy's Chief of Naval Information with the Thompson-Ravitz Award for Junior Civilian Public Affairs Officer of the Year.

O'Rourke, an employee of Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) headquarters located in Washington Navy Yard, received the award for contributions on high profile projects for NAVSEA. She helped examine publications across the command to determine if efficiencies could be realized from elimination or product delivery methods. Implementation of audit findings is expected to achieve a savings of more than $1 million.

O'Rourke is the daughter of Mary Jane O'Rourke and the late Thomas M. O'Rourke of Cumberland. She is a 2003 graduate of Bishop Walsh High School and a 2007 graduate of Marymount University.

    Hi Colleen,

My name is Robert Clarence Marvin, Jr. My father, Robert Clarence Marvin, Sr. was part of Attack Squadron VA-115 which served on the Kitty Hawk. He was killed on Feb 14, 1967 while flying his A1 Skyraider on mission. I was two years old at the time and am his only child.

I recently discovered that the Kitty Hawk is stationed in Bremerton, Washington and is scheduled to be scrapped. I have never had the opportunity to see his ship. His only sibling, Bill Marvin, as well as my father’s only grandson, Christian Marvin, will be heading to Bremerton on Sunday September 23rd , 2018 to see the Kitty Hawk even if we just get to see it from the parking lot.

I would love to know if we could actually get a tour of the ship and/or a small piece of the ship before it gets scrapped.

The only other ship he served on was the Hancock, which was scrapped in the early 1970’s. Unfortunately, almost all of the other “memorabilia” I had from my dad burned in a fire in 1978: most of his medals, his naval sword, hundreds of photos, etc. Thus, the Kitty Hawk is one of the very last items that remains that connects me with my father.

I would greatly appreciate any consideration you can give to this.

    Thank you.
