Parkside Elementary School Teacher Accepted as Teacher Fellow

December 10th, 2015 by WCBC Radio

Parkside Elementary School fifth grade teacher, Kathy Tummino, was recently accepted into the Northrop Grumman Foundation and the National Science Teachers Association’s (NSTA) 2015-2016 Northrop Grumman Foundations Teachers Academy as a Teacher Fellow. Selected by a national panel of STEM education experts, Tummino was chosen from a highly competitive pool of applicants from across the country.

The goal of the Teachers Academy is to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Education, Mathematics) education in grades 5-8 by offering professional learning for teachers during a yearlong immersion in STEM-related activities. Northrop Grumman engineers will provide Teacher Fellows with real-world perspectives, and they will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of science-related activities including web seminars, workshops and externships.

“We welcome our first class of distinguished educators selected to participate in the Northrop Grumman Foundation Teachers Academy,” said Sandra Evers-Manly, Northrop Grumman Vice-President, Global Corporate Responsibility and President of the Northrop Grumman Foundation. “They play a critical role in the development of young minds and it is our goal that this program will give them additional tools and resources to be even more impactful in their classrooms.”

Tummino will attend the NSTA National Conference on Science Education in March; a five-day summer workshop at a Northrop Grumman facility in July; and an externship at Northrop Grumman in July and August. She will also be charged with developing a lesson plan or unit linked to the thematic area of her externship experience to implement as part of her classroom curriculum the following school year. She states, “I am very excited and honored to be given such a wonderful opportunity.”

Teacher Fellows and Northrop Grumman engineers and technologists will become part of an ongoing Northrop Grumman Foundation professional learning community within the NSTA Learning Center network.  Teacher Fellows will also have the opportunity to share what they learned within their respective school districts.
