Pre-Sentence Investigation ordered for Shaffer

The Cumberland Times News reports a-Pre-Sentence Investigation report has been ordered in the State of Maryland vs Megan Virginia Shaffer case.

Shaffer, 21, of Ridgeley, West Virginia, was charged with second-degree murder, manslaughter and assisting another to commit or attempt to commit suicide in the death of Alexander Stevens,

On March 19, a 12-member jury at Garrett County Circuit Court found her guilty of second-degree murder.

Now, the PSI, controlled by the Division of Parole and Probation, will take roughly 60 to 90 days to complete, Garrett court officials said. 

Sentencing, which is the next step, will be set after that report is filed with the court. 

Depending on the availability of counsel and or witnesses, sentencing generally is set within 30 days. 

At the conclusion of sentencing, counsel for the state and defense will have 30 days to file an appeal to the Court of Special Appeals.
