Rep. John Delaney Rumored To Be Considering Presidential Run

May 4th, 2017 by WCBC Radio

That is basically the standard answer Maryland Representative John Delaney has given over the past year when asked about his political future- but the rumors persist that he may look to move beyond Maryland’s Sixth Congressional District as early as next year. While most of the speculation has centered on a possible run for governor,  a couple of news items that surfaced this  week suggest Delaney  may be looking at a bigger prize.   Ryan Miner, who runs a blog focusing on Maryland news and commentary, relayed a conversation he had with Maryland’s former  Attorney General Doug Gansler at the Western Maryland Democratic Summit at Rocky Gap Casino Resort.  According to Miner, Gansler told him that Delaney is not running for governor, and he added that he would like to see the democrat congressman make a run for the President instead.  Adding  some heat to that suggestion was an offhand comment made by political commentator Chris Matthew on his MSNBC program “Hardball” Monday night suggesting Delaney is opening an office in Iowa.   Further connecting the dots, Matthew’s wife, Kathleen, is the Maryland Democratic Party’s interim chair who may have some inside knowledge of Delaney’s long term strategy.  WCBC News contacted Delaney’s office about the story and received a one sentence e-mail reply from a spokesman saying simply: “Congressman Delaney does not have an office open in Iowa”.  The congressman’s political plans are expected to become clearer in the near future as he is scheduled to make an announcement on June 26th
