Sen. Edwards Responds To Commissioner Shade Addressing Gaming Funds Distribution

February 20th, 2020 by WCBC Radio

WCBC has obtained a letter from District 1 Senator George Edwards to Allegany County Commission President Jake Shade, addressing the issues surrounding the distribution of funds allocated to the county from video gaming at Rocky Gap Casino.  Senator Edwards says he will not introduce legislation to allocate a fixed percentage of that funding to the Opportunity Scholarship Program for county students to attend Allegany College of Maryland and Frostburg State University.  Edwards feels such a move would lead to more groups looking to lock down funding, and would hamstring the commissioners in the budget process. Edwards also noted that committee staff has indicated the recommendations of the local development council (LDC) are advisory, and that the commissioners have the final say on how such revenues are expended. County Commissioner David Caporale was a guest on WCBC’s “Dave Norman Show” Wednesday to discuss the issue. He said he believes all of the public dialogue and speculation regarding the future of the scholarship program has been premature as the LDC is set to further discuss the matter at a meeting in the next few weeks…

Dear Mr. President Shade, please be advised that I am passing the buck on this issue as I don’t want anything that might possibly come back to bite me in the ass come election time. I’m sure you understand and are already looking for your way out of this mess. Best of luck.
    Senator George Edwards.
