A 35-year-old inmate of the Western Correctional Institution suffered six stab wounds Wednesday night when he was attacked on a housing tier of the maximum-security prison, according to a spokesman for the Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services. The Cumberland Times News reports the victim reportedly contacted correctional officers shortly after 8 p.m., telling them he had been stabbed in the head and torso. Spokesman Gerard Shields said a Cresaptown Volunteer Fire Department ambulance took the injured inmate to the Western Maryland Regional Medical Center for treatment. Shields said Thursday he was in stable condition. Three suspects have been identified in the ongoing investigation that included review of video surveillance of the housing tier where the incident is believed to have occurred, Shields said.

The victim is serving a 60-year sentence for kidnapping. He began serving the prison term in 2012.
