West Side Today: Sunday’s Status

June 24th, 2018 by WCBC Radio

CSX officials from Huntington will be in Cumberland Monday to talk with city government on what to do about the condition of three West Side Bridges.

A bad situation got worse Thursday when a freight train carrying double stacked containers crashed into the Fayette and Washington Street Bridges. Now all three bridges are closed to traffic, and an inspection to determine damage sustained on Thursday is scheduled to begin as soon as possible.

Ironically, one of the sticking points in getting the bridges fixed has been the desire of the railroad to have the bridges built high enough to accommodate double stacks. Another issue has been a relatively recent CSX claim that it doesn't own the bridges, even though it has maintained them in the past.
