Caterpillar Outbreak In Region

July 2nd, 2025 by WCBC Radio

Populations of spring hardwood defoliating caterpillars have reached outbreak levels in Garrett, Allegany, and Washington Counties, causing widespread leaf damage to hardwood trees, especially oaks.  Trees affected will take on a winter look but will not be dead.  New leaf growth should be seen on the trees by mid-July.  Green Ridge State Forest and Polish Mountain have been the hardest hit areas of Allegany County.
