Maryland AG Announces Settlement with Verso Luke

April 1st, 2021 by WCBC Radio

Maryland Attorney General Brian Frosh and Maryland Environment Secretary Ben Grumbles announced a settlement with Verso Luke and its parent company, Verso Corporation. The settlement resolves a dispute regarding seepages into the Potomac River near the Luke Paper Mill facility.  As a result of the settlement, Verso will be required to investigate and plug the cause of the leak.  Verso must also remediate the contaminated site. The company will also be liable for a civil penalty of $650,000 and the court fees associated with this dispute. Delegate Wendell Beitzel said that he is glad to see this matter resolved- suggesting it will remove a cloud from the Verso mill property- making it more attractive to perspective buyers.
