MD250 Art and Photo Competition

October 18th, 2025 by WCBC Radio

The Passages of the Western Potomac Heritage Area (PWPHA), managed by the Canal Place Preservation and Development Authority, is proud to announce the 2026 Youth Art and Community Photo Competition, a creative celebration marking the Nation’s 250th anniversary and the Maryland 250 celebration. The competition invites young artists and community photographers to explore themes of Allegany County history and heritage through art and photography.

The Youth Art Competition is open to school-aged amateur artists (ages 6–17) living in or attending school in Allegany County. Participants may submit original artwork in any medium—painting, drawing, collage, sculpture, or mixed media (no digital art)—accompanied by a short essay of 500 words or less describing the inspiration behind the work. Entries will be judged by age group (6–8, 9–13, and 14–17) in three categories: Most Creative, Best Representation of the Maryland 250, and People’s Choice.

The Community Photo Competition welcomes all amateur photographers residing in Allegany County. Entrants are invited to submit original photographs that reflect the themes ‘What I Love About Allegany County History’ or ‘Why Heritage is Important.’ Photographs may be displayed and used in future Heritage Area promotional materials.

Submissions for both competitions will be accepted April 1–30, 2026, at the Western Maryland Railway Station (CPPDA offices, 3rd floor), Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.–4 p.m. All entries must include the artist’s or photographer’s name, age (if applicable), school (if applicable), and contact information. All entries will be displayed on Saturday, June 13, 2026, at the Western Maryland Railway Station, where public voting for the People’s Choice Awards will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Awards will be announced at 5 p.m. at the conclusion of the event.

“The 2026 competition is more than an art show—it’s a celebration of community pride and shared history,” said Kim Folk, Marketing & Media Director of the Passages of the Western Potomac Heritage Area. “Whether it’s a young artist’s painting or a resident’s photograph of a beloved landmark, every piece tells part of our region’s story.”
