A state of emergency in Maryland was declared Thursday by the Moore Administration to address the suspension of SNAP food benefit payments for November. The Governor directed the release of $10 million from the Fiscal Responsibility Fund to organizations across the state experienced in food distribution to quickly address food needs. Moore said what is being done in the Trump administration is cruel and illegal…
“They are breaking the law to show how cruel they can be. That I’m thinking about the work they are doing and how cruelty has essentially become a governance philosophy of the Trump Administration. Because the money is there. They are choosing not to allocate it.”
Senate Minority Leader Steve Hershey said Moore chose a harder, less effective path by not supplementing the SNAP program, handing off the responsibility to nonprofits.
