12. RIVERSIDE DESTRUCTION & CONSTRUCTION:
Heavy rains and flooding demolished ball fields, closing all fields since May. After decades of push and pull on the subject, the City of Cumberland opens the Cumberland Skate Park at Riverside.
11. COACH PHIL CARR RETIRES FROM FOOTBALL:
After decades at the Northern helm, Coach Phil Carr makes it official- announcing his retirement from football after a 2024 season that saw Northern’s first state title berth.
10. ALCO BOYS / MR GIRLS SOCCER TEAMS MAKE STATE SEMIFINALS:
After impressive runs into the state playoffs, Allegany boys soccer and Mtn Ridge girls soccer end their seasons in the state semifinals.
9. SOUTHERN GIRLS BASKETBALL MAKES STATE TITLE:
Lady Rams make second straight state championship game, fall to Pikesville in heartbreaker.
8. TY JOHNSON SIGNS 2YR – $5MIL CONTRACT WITH BILLS:
Cumberland’s own Ty Johnson continues to impress in the NFL, scoring several TDs leading to signing a two year deal in March. QB Josh Allen has referred to Johnson as the best 3rd down back in the NFL.
7. MIKEY ALLEN & DANNY KING IMPRESS AT SOUTHERN UTAH:
In his final season, King nailed several key FG’s as well as impressive punts. It was a breakout season for Allen, who had multiple INTs as well as his first DEF TD off a TD!
6. FORT HILL STATE TITLE RUN ENDS IN 5TH STRAIGHT TITLE BERTH:
After 4 straight 1A State Championships, the Sentinels fall to Patuxent in 1A title game!
5. AVERY MILLER SETS NEW INDIVIDUAL TRACK MEDAL RECORD:
After another impressive TNF season, the Penn State commit finishes her high school career with 13 individual track medals!
4. COACH TIM NIGHTENGALE ANNOUNCES RETIREMENT FROM SOCCER POST:
Including his time at Beall, Nightengale posted a 4-0 record in state championships, winning one at Beall in 2004, back to back titles at Mountain Ridge 2010-2011, as well as one in 2019. He coached a record 17 teams to area titles.
3. FROSTBURG MAKES FIRST D2 NATIONAL PLAYOFFS – ADVANCING TO THE QUARTERFINALS:
Head Coach Eric Wagoner & the MEC Champion Bobcats punched their ticket to the D2 playoffs winning two game and advancing to the quarterfinal round where they fell to #1 Kutztown.
2. ALLEGANY WINS BASEBALL STATE CHAMPIONSHIP:
After 35 years, the Campers bring home a Maryland 1A State Title!
1. FRANKFORT GOES BACK -2- BACK – WINS SECOND STRAIGHT STATE FOOTBALL TITLE:
After an undefeated season and a WV AA State Championship, Coach Whiteman and the Falcons run the table again, winning another AA State title and taking a 28-game winning streak into the fall!
