Although the early days of North Mechanic Street are in the headlines, the Allegany County Historical Society’s expanded Program Team has been spending a significant amount of time digging into the world class collections at the Whiting House. In declaring 2024 to be “The Year of the Whitings”, planning more programming about these people, their era and their collections and empowering local experts in art and books who are new to our Program Team to share these treasures with subject matter specialists around the world and invite those experts to Western Maryland.
When Sachiko Hori, a Manhattan based Asian art expert, visited Whiting last February, she shared with us that these are amazing collections in their quality and… asked a question that needs to be answered over and over to our community’s benefit…”Why here?”
