Maryland’s Department of Natural Resources is getting ready for the 2023 black bear hunting season. Applications are now being accepted for a permit valid for the special 6-day hunting season which opens October 23 in Allegany, Frederick, Garrett and Washington Counties. The DNR uses the annual bear hunt as a tool to slow the increase and expansion of the black bear population into the eastern suburbs of the state. The department will issue 950 permits for the hunt. Hunters may apply for the lottery online or at a state hunting license agent. All entries must be completed by August 31st and the drawing will be held September 6th.
