Black Bears Emerging

April 12th, 2024 by WCBC Radio

In many places, black bears have already emerged from accessible food sources.

Bears are most common in Maryland’s four westernmost counties – Allegany, Frederick, Garrett, and Washington, known as Maryland’s bear country. This season, the Maryland Department of Resources checked six dens, finding six sows and 18 cubs. The team handled a 305-pound, 26-year-old sow who State Bear Biologist Jonathan Trudeau said is the oldest bear on record in Maryland, indicating a healthy bear population with ample food supply.
