City Council Raise First in 42 Years

July 10th, 2023 by WCBC Radio

Plans are in progress to allow for a pay raise for Cumberland Mayor and City Council members.  The annual rate of pay for the council has not been adjusted for 42 years – currently the Mayor receives $7,200 per year and council members $4,800.  The suggested raise would be more than double to $15,000 and $10,000 respectively.  According to council member Rock Cioni, the changes are being suggested on the recommendation of city staff who have been looking at pay grades for all employees…

Mayor Morriss commented also that the officers of the Mayor and Council attend many functions in the community without reimbursement on travel, time, or other expenses…

Council Member Lauri Marchini said that City staff had approached the council about the raises and thought now was the best time to address pay rates…

For comparison, the Allegany County Commission President receives $36,480 per year and Commissioners receive $35,331. The Allegany County Board of Education President receives $7,428 and members receive $6,077. They are also eligible to participate in healthcare benefits.
