The subject of tax differential has always been a tricky one between the city of Cumberland and Allegany County. The differential is a rebate on property taxes town residents pay the county for services like emergency management; libraries; the health department and animal control. What that rebate should be has been subject to some heated debates over the years – at one point leading the two sides into court with the city claiming the county collects an excessive amount of real property tax revenue from municipal residents. While the subject no longer rises to that level of contentiousness, during the county’s annual budget process, time is always taken to make note of the vast array of services the county provides for municipal residents…
