Downtown Business Owner Not Happy With Parking Fines

August 27th, 2025 by WCBC Radio

The City of Cumberland’s attempts to cut down on drivers parking illegally in handicapped parking spaces has one downtown business owner considering the future of his business.  Jim Weir, owner of Awesome Gifts and Collectibles, owns a corner property at Baltimore and North Centre Streets. He tells WCBC that high parking fines won’t attract shoppers…

“You start giving out $500 parking tickets – this place out here will be as barren as it can be.”

Weir also told WCBC that he will be seriously considering moving on if the new fines stick…

“And I’ll personally guarantee you this – they make that parking fine out here $500, this store is for sale and I’m gone. That’s what I think of that idea.”
