Early Offense Gives #21 Golden Rams Victory Over Baseball

March 3rd, 2024 by WCBC Radio

Frostburg State Baseball team dropped the second game of their Saturday doubleheader to No. 21 West Chester by a final of 10-3.

FSU began the game at the plate, where junior Mikey Guy ripped a single into left, then junior Danny Estrada was hit by a pitch to put two on with two out, but a groundout to short ended the threat without a run. WCU put the first run on the board in the bottom half of the first, earning a pair of singles, with the latter plating the runner all the way from first for a 1-0 lead.

The Bobcats again had multiple runners on in the second, but a fly out and strikeout denied them a score. The Golden Rams then took advantage of a leadoff error to begin their half of the inning, as two outs were followed by a single, triple, and double in succession that put three runs on the board for a 4-0 advantage.

West Chester proceeded to work a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the third before getting a two-RBI single followed by a two-run homer to move ahead 8-0. Freshman Ryan Bouma laced a two-out double into left in the fourth, followed by a walk from junior Ben Wieman, but as was the theme so far on the day, a strikeout kept Frostburg off the board. West Chester continued to roll on offense, making it four scoring innings in a row after a walk, single, and error made it 9-0.

Both teams had a scoreless fifth, then another RBI single in the bottom of the sixth put WCU in double digits with a 10-0 lead. After no offense from either side in the seventh, Frostburg finally came to life in the top of the eighth, with several lineup changes given the opportunity to impress. Freshman Logan Helser led off with a walk, but was thrown out at second on a fielder's choice off the bat of junior Christian Shertzer. Freshman Cole Carter was hit by a pitch, then senior Justin Jimenez roped a double into left that scored both runners and put FSU on the board at 10-2. A balk then put Jimenez on third, where he jogged home on a liner into left from senior pinch hitter Lucas Gulczynski before a groundout ended the frame with a pair of runners on base and a 10-3 score.

After the Golden Rams went scoreless in the bottom of the eighth, Helser drew another walk with out out in the ninth, but was left stranded out a strikeout and pop-out, giving No. 21 in the country the seven-run victory.

With the loss, Frostburg drops to 4-5 on the year, while West Chester remains unbeaten at 6-0. FSU wraps up their weekend in Cary with a 9 AM game against Gannon on Sunday, March 3. Information and updates will be posted to frostburgsports.com.
