Flood plain maps are undergoing a major review and revision process. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has been working for several years to update the flood insurance rate maps. These maps are utilized by FEMA to support the National Flood Insurance Program.
Allegany County Government mailed detailed information earlier this year to property owners whose properties within the unincorporated areas of the county have been identified as “directly affected” by the flood plain map revision. The Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) had a presentation and question and answer session in Allegany County last month.
Interested property owners are encouraged to review additional information at the following websites:
- Federal Government: www.msc.fema.gov and www.FloodSmart.gov
- State of Maryland: www.mdfloodmaps.com
- Allegany County: www.floods.allconet.org and www.gov.allconet.org.
Determination made by the Federal Emergency Management Agency may be appealed through August 30, 2016.
The Allegany County Land Development Services Office can assist all property owners whose property is in an unincorporated area of Allegany County. The telephone number is 301-777-5951.
