Eleven volunteer fire companies in Allegany County were recently awarded Volunteer Fire Assistance grants from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. The grants come through the Maryland Forest Service and are to be used for wildland firefighting projects and equipment including hoses, power tools, engines and pumping units and all-terrain vehicles. Funding was provided to 52 volunteer firefighting units across the state.
