Frosh Urges Congress To Reauthorize The Violence Against Women Act

September 17th, 2018 by WCBC Radio

Maryland Attorney General Brian E. Frosh today joined 55 other state and territory attorneys general in urging Congress to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) before it expires this year.

“Thousands of victims of sexual violence depend on programs that receive grant funding through VAWA,” said Attorney General Frosh. “To allow this legislation to expire would be devastating to those affected by sexual violence, and extremely disruptive to victims who are recovering with the help of these crucial resources. Sexual assault and violence is unacceptable, and we need to do everything we can to prevent it and support victims of these heinous crimes.”

Under VAWA, originally passed in 1994, over $6 billion in grant funding has been awarded to government and nonprofit organizations nationwide. The grants have funded training and assistance to address and reduce domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, and stalking. The grants have also funded resources and services to assist survivors, prosecute offenders, and facilitate partnerships between prosecutors, judges, advocates, community organizations, and health care providers.

In their letter, the attorneys general emphasized the importance of VAWA in reducing the rate of sexual violence toward women and addressing the devastating effects of these crimes. They urged Congress to continue funding for programs that have helped millions of domestic violence and sexual assault survivors.

I find this whole article such a lie. I was sexually assaulted robbed of everything I own except what I could pick up in a 1 time trip to the house I was living in. All after being abused. While at the hospital my abuser stole my medications knowing I was leaving when I returned from the hospital that night. The next day when I went to the sheriffs office I felt like I was assulted again I was treated like the criminal not the criminal. After insisting on an investigation they finally took my bottles that my medicine was stolen from and told me I had to go to the court house to file a peace order to have anything done . However that was only after they put me through the most ridiculous sobriety test and told me if I drove away from the sheriff station I would be arrested for DUI I was by no means drunk high or impaired in anyway I wear contacts they forced me to hold my eyes up for so long it loosened my contacts and made my eyes shake I have a broken back and I’m disabled and they make me stand on one leg with my other leg forward they made me walk in a straight line all after I told them these were things my body was on able to do because of the broken back the reason I’m disabled. So I called somebody to pick up my vehicle when they finally got their four hours later the police officers told me oh you’re OK now you could drive home they just wanted to harass me some more because I was the victim I had been sexually assaulted I had been beaten up and when I finally had my day in court for my temp peace order my abuser admitted everything. I was forced to move away from the state to Florida to get away from him but I kept in contact with the police station so I could press the charges for the sexual assault and the assault and the theft of all my belongings but your office said since I moved out of state you would not prosecute I was willing to come back and do whatever I had to do to make my abuser pay for what they did to me but your office refused so tell me how do you help? I have to live with this every day knowing he got away with everything I can’t do anything about it he gets to keep my most prize possessions family antiques my children’s baby pic I know he threw away. He can do this to whoever else he wants cause you said there’s nothing wrong with it even after your sheriff question ed him and he admitted it to him. Nothing went any further.I can’t believe anything your saying in this article because to me it’s all lies. And that’s from personal experience with Calvert county ….
