Hagerstown Man Arrested for Saturday’s Shooting

On October 28, 2023, at 1:40 am the Cumberland Police Department received a report of a shooting in an alley in the Mechanic Street area.  Upon arrival, officers discovered a chaotic scene with one 17-year-old male suffering from a gunshot wound.  Officers began providing medical aid along with the Cumberland Fire Department; however, the victim later succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.   Responding officers from all area agencies along with the Maryland State Police helicopter began identifying people running from the scene.   Of those stopped, was 24-year-old Devonte Warfield of Hagerstown.  Devonte Warfield was found to be in possession of cocaine and fentanyl and was subsequently arrested for possession with intent to distribute controlled dangerous substances. 

Responding CPD officers, along with Deputies from the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office and Troopers from the Maryland State Police along with Detectives from the Allegany County Combined Criminal Investigation Unit began conducting further investigation into the shooting.  Eventually, three additional gunshot victims associated with this incident arrived at the hospital.  These additional victims were between the ages of 20 and 24, from the Allegany County area, and had non life-threatening gunshot wounds to their lower extremities.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner determined that the 17-year-old male had been shot several times in the torso causing his death.

During the subsequent investigation detectives interviewed several witnesses and victims.  Officers also analyzed numerous sources of evidence found at the crime scene in addition to other sources of evidence which included a recovered handgun.   As a result of the investigation further information was developed connecting Devonte Warfield with the murder of the 17-year-old as well as the injuring of others. 

As a result, Devonte Robert Warfield, age 24, of Hagerstown has been additionally charged with First degree murder, 3 counts of attempted first degree murder, 3 counts of felony assault, 3 counts of reckless endangerment, Use of a handgun during a felony and Resisting arrest.

Warfield is being held without bond at the Allegany County Detention Center.
