Majority of School Buildings Past Lifespan

September 25th, 2025 by WCBC Radio

A recent report from the Maryland Comptroller’s office showed that only 20% of public school buildings in the state were rated “like new” while Allegany and Garrett were among five counties with buildings well past their lifespan. State School Superintendent Dr. Carey Wright told reporters the state average indicates a need to prioritize repairs and updates…

“Our average index is at 52% right now, meaning that over half of the useful life of these buildings have been depleted. The reasonable average that we look for across the state is between 32 and 37%, so you can see that it’s much higher than what we want it to be.”
