Lung cancer continues to be the leading cause of cancer deaths in Maryland and across the U.S. but Maryland does have some positive news. The American Lung Association’s “State of Lung Cancer” report shows that Maryland ranks second among states for the lowest rate of non-smoking adults. The state is about even with the nation as a whole on screening. ABC’s Erielle Reshef says the low nationwide percentage is concerning…
“Less than 20 percent of eligible adults are actually up to date on lung cancer screening. Researchers found just 16 percent of people who meet the criteria, are getting the suggested testing. The current guidelines recommend CT scans for adults ages 50 to 80, with a smoking history of 20 or more pack years. That's packs per day, multiplied by the years of smoking.”
