Newborn Baby Found Alive On Porch Of Hagerstown Home

March 30th, 2016 by WCBC Radio

Police in Hagerstown say a newborn baby was found alive and wrapped in a plastic bag on the back porch of a home.

Police Officer Heather Aleshire says officers were called to the home on Frederick Street shortly after 7 a.m. Wednesday. Temperatures were near freezing at that time.

Aleshire says the child has been flown to Children's National Medical Center in Washington for treatment.

Maryland has a "safe haven" law designed to prevent abandonment of newborn babies. Under the law, a distressed parent who is unable or unwilling to care for their infant can safely give up custody at hospitals or police stations with no questions asked.
