Special School Board Meeting
The Allegany County Board of Education will meet for a Special Public Session, on Tuesday, May 6, 2025 at 5:00 p.m., at the Board of Education Central Office, 108 Washington St., Cumberland, MD 21502. At that time, the Board will discuss a personnel matter. These discussion items are permitted under the Open Meetings Act, Section 10-508 (a)(1) and (a)(7) and Section 10-103. Gov. Morrisey Orders Flags Lowered to Half Staff in Honor of National Firefighters Memorial Day
Governor Patrick Morrisey has ordered flags at state facilities to be flown at half staff on Sunday, May 4, 2025, to honor National Firefighters Memorial Day. National Firefighters Day was first approved by a Joint Resolution of Congress on October 16, 2001, to honor federal, state, and local firefighters who have fallen in the line of duty. An average of 80 firefighters courageously make the ultimate sacrifice each year.

The Mayor and City Council of Cumberland will meet in public session beginning at 4:00 p.m. in the 2nd floor Conference Room of City Hall on Tuesday, May 6, 2025, for the purpose of immediately closing the meeting to discuss matters relating to employee compensation and to receive an update on Police Collective Bargaining. Morgan Files For Sheriff
Major David Morgan of the Allegany County Sheriff’s Department has officially filed to run for Sheriff. Major Morgan announced on Friday that he had made the decision after months of discussion with his wife. Morgan said current Sheriff Craig Robertson had approached him about running for the office. Sheriff Robertson said he would not be seeking another term.
Vape Shop Bust
Garrett County law enforcement agencies executed a Search and Seizure Warrant at Sammy’s Vape Shop along Garrett Highway in Oakland on May 1. During the search, Detectives recovered over 150 individual packages of marijuana totaling approximately 1 pound of marijuana. Detectives also seized $1,733.00 in United States Currency. As a result, Detectives arrested and charged Ebrahim Abdullah Ali, 33 years old, Oakland, with Possession with Intent to Distribute Cannabis. Ali is currently being held in the Garrett County Detention Center.

City Police Report for Saturday
On May 2nd, 2025 at approximately 7:50 p.m. officers from the Cumberland Police Department responded to the 300 block of Avirett Avenue for the report of an assault. Upon arrival officers made contact with the victim who advised that they were placed into a headlock by James Richard Hupp Jr. The officers observed injuries consistent with the victim's statement and subsequently placed Hupp under arrest. Hupp was transported to central booking where he is currently waiting for a bond review. NAME: James Richard Hupp Jr. AGE: 70 Cumberland, MD CHARGE: Assault 2nd degree
Property Tax Increase Pulled Back
The Allegany County Commissioners pulled back the idea of a property tax increase this week, and will instead use money from the county’s general fund to help balance the budget. Recent news that the state would be increasing the county’s disparity grant helped drive the decision and that the disparity money could replace the general funds being used this year.
Warrant Arrest
On May 1, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department served six Arrest Warrants on David Martin Boyd. The warrants were issued when Boyd failed to appear in court for six different cases. The charges for those cases include, Assaults, Dangerous Weapon Conceal, Disorderly Conduct, and Use Credit Card of Another. Boyd was seen before a District Court Commissioner and remanded to the Allegany County Detention Center, held without bond.
