Park Street Shoplifting Arrest
On 08/06/2023 at approximately 5:30 PM the Cumberland City Police were dispatched to a business in the 900 block of Park Street for a shoplifting complaint. Officers contacted an employee and learned a male subject had just left the store without paying for several items. The employee advised the same suspect had also stolen items earlier in the same day. Officers contacted Daniel Miller nearby and located some of the stolen items in his possession. Criminal Summons Failure to stop after unattended vehicle damage
On 08/01/2023 at approximately 12:30 PM the Cumberland City Police Department were dispatched to the 100 block of Beall Street for a hit and run investigation. Officers learned a vehicle had hit a parked vehicle and left the scene of the accident. The Officer was able to locate surveillance video from a nearby business and identify a suspect. The Officer located the suspect vehicle and was able to identify damage consistent with the video surveillance. Maryland’s First Month of Marijuana Sales Tops $80 Million
Recreational Cannabis sales in Maryland recorded a strong first month of sales with the huge sum of over $87 million being spent on the substance. Legalized in July, recreational cannabis is currently allowed to be sold through those businesses that hold a license to dispense medical marijuana, though applications for new dispensary licenses are being processed through the state’s systems. The Maryland Cannabis Administration released a report showing that the first weekend of legalized sales resulted in over $10 million in sales of medical and adult-use weed, ramping up quickly to the month-end retail sales total of $87.4 million.
Downtown Digging Up History

Residential Fire on West 1st Street
Allegany County Emergency Services responding to a Two Alarm residential house fire on West 1st Street in Cumberland last night. Initial firefighters responding finding two homes involved with a possible entrapment. Fire crews continued to battle the original call as two neighboring homes caught fire. Mutual Aid fire crews from the surrounding area required the closing of Virginia Avenue for an hour for staging. No report of any serious injuries. The Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fires.
City of Cumberland Public Notice
The Mayor and City Council of Cumberland will meet in public session beginning at 4:00 p.m. in the second floor conference room of City Hall on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, for the purpose of immediately closing the meeting to have a City Incentive Discussion regarding the Memorial Hospital Project. Authority to close the session is provided by Section 3-305(b)(13) of the General Provisions Article of the Annotated Code of Maryland. The Open Work Session will then begin at 4:30 in the second floor conference room. Questions regarding this matter may be directed to the City Clerk's office.
