Northrop Grumman Releases First Quarter Financials
Northrop Grumman Corporation reported a backlog of work valued at almost $93 billion dollars in the first quarter of 2025. The company had sales of $9.5 billion, down 7% from Q1 of 2024. Net earnings totaled $481 million, down from over 900 million last year. Northrop says the loss is due mainly to higher manufacturing and materials costs as well as process changes to accelerate production. The company repaid $1.6 billion of long-term debt and returned $800 million to shareholders through dividends and share repurchases.
Boone Street Burglary, Trespassing Arrest
On Wednesday, April 23rd, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department responded to a vacant Boone St. residence for the report of a breaking and entering. Once on scene, officers contacted the owners of the property, who advised they had come to the property to change the locks after recently evicting the previous tenant. When they arrived, they found the front door had been kicked in, and the previous tenant asleep inside. Officers then contacted the previous tenant who advised that they had been inside the property. MOTOR VEHICLE CRASH
On Wednesday, April 23rd, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department responded to the 800 block of Gephart Dr. for the report of a motor vehicle that had struck a house. Once on scene, officers discovered that a 2008 Toyota Tacoma, operated by a 79-year-old female, had lost control while traveling down Cleveland Avenue. The vehicle then traveled across Gephart Drive and struck the front of a duplex that was unoccupied at the time. The Toyota operator was evaluated and uninjured during the crash. The cause of the crash remains under investigation at this time.

The City of Cumberland’s Police Officer of the Year is relatively new to the force. Governor Signs 142 Bills Into Law
In an hours long ceremony Tuesday, Maryland Governor Wes Moore signed over 140 pieces of legislation into law, including the Expungement Reform Act. Governor Moore said the new law expands eligibility for those with criminal records to have their history expunged, removing barriers to employment, housing, and education… “We are leaving too much on the table. Including when it comes to men and boys who are returning citizens. Because over 95% of Maryland’s incarcerated population is male and many of those men deserve a second chance.”
Comptroller Says State Must Invest Climate Protections
In the latest of a new series of reports, the State Comptroller’s Office is looking at the costs of climate change in Maryland. The state has spent over $20 billion dollars covering damage in the last 20 years from extreme weather events. Comptroller Brooke Lierman says it is costly not to act and imperative to invest in strategies that increase the state’s climate resilience… “And while we don’t yet know the total cost of inaction, we do know the consequences. Economic instability, widening health disparities, irreversible environmental damage.”
WV Calls Attention to Workzones
The death of a highway worker last week and the severe injury of another in January drove home the point of Workzone Awareness Week in West Virginia. A new way to help prospective businesses find a location in the Cumberland area is being used by the Cumberland Economic Development Corporation. Garrett County Sheriff’s Office is aware of phone call scams going around the area, where the caller ID is showing the Sheriff’s Office number and the caller is claiming to be Sgt Bates from the Sheriffs Office telling individuals they missed a court date and they must pay a fine or spend time in jail. Sgt Bates is not an employee of the Sheriff’s Office. Sheriff Meyers would like to remind residents that these types of calls are scams and the Sheriff’s Office does not call individuals to pay fines.
