Longtime Owner of former County Market in LaVale passes

Michael Giovinazzo, of Lancaster, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Jan. 10. Born on June 7, 1931, in Ravenna, Ohio, Mike was the son of Rosario and Maria (Martelli) Giovinazzo. He owned and operated several County Market supermarkets in Maryland and Pennsylvania including one in LaVale until retiring in 2002. Funeral services will be held at Immaculate Conception Parish at 409 W. Main Street at Ravenna, Ohio, on Saturday, Jan. 21, 2023, 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital

Maryland State Police Seeks To Educate Public About Warning Signs Of Human Trafficking

With January being Human Trafficking Prevention Month, Maryland State Police are urging the public to recognize potential warning signs to reduce the chances of others becoming victims in the future. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, a child is trafficked for the purpose of sexual exploitation every two minutes in the United States. There are also an estimated 24 million people trapped in human trafficking worldwide, according to the Center for Prevention of Abuse.   Victims of human trafficking become entrapped in a variety of ways. Columbia Gas work will Close part of North Centre Street

The City of Cumberland Engineering Department would like to notify the public on the behalf of Columbia Gas of Maryland that on January 20th there will be construction performed on North Centre Street, between Frederick Street Extended and Bedford Street Extended.   Between the hours of 7AM and 5PM, this block of Centre Street will be closed to all traffic. All vehicles will be detoured onto Frederick Street Extended towards Queen City Drive. Arrest Warrants Served

On January 18th, 2023 officers of the Cumberland Police Department served an Arrest Warrant on David Easton Williams. The Arrest Warrant was issued by the District Court when Williams violated the conditions of his probation. Williams was taken before a District Court Commissioner where he was held without bond. Cumberland City Police officers recognized and honored this week

On the afternoon of October 27th last year, three Cumberland City Police officers responded to an incident at Jane Frazier Village- and through their efforts saved the life of an infant. Those officers were recognized and honored this week during the Mayor and City Council meeting. First to arrive that day was PFC Cassidy Lease. She immediately reacted when she heard and then saw an out of control woman in an overflowing bathtub lying on top of a baby trying to end its life. Cumberland not satisfied with the current level of service being provided by Breezeline

Not satisfied with the current level of service being provided by Breezeline- the Cumberland Mayor and City Council has retained a legal team that specializes in cable franchise agreements to work on a re-newed deal. The city and Breezeline have been without an agreement for more than a year- and when the council members began getting inundated with concerns and complaints from citizens- a decision was made to seek some outside assistance. Cumberland Mayor and City Council authorized one year contract extensions for Burgmeier’s Hauling

The Cumberland Mayor and City Council this week authorized one year contract extensions for Burgmeier’s Hauling for trash collection; and with Noble Environment Mountain View Landfill for tipping fees. The extensions run through June of 2024. The focal point and theme of Mountain Maryland PACE 2023 will be the region’s outdoors recreation economy. The annual event is set for tonight and Friday morning at the Westin Annapolis Hotel. W.Va. AG Announces $83M Opioid Settlement with Walgreens

West Virginia Attorney General Patrick Morrisey on Wednesday announced a settlement has been reached between his office and Walgreens for $83 million. The settlement resolves a lawsuit that alleged the pharmacy chain failed to maintain effective controls as a distributor and dispenser against diversion that contributed to oversupply of opioids in the state.   “We will continue to seek out justice for those affected the most by the opioid epidemic that hit our state the hardest,” Attorney General Morrisey said. “This and other settlements will not bring back the lives lost from the opioid menace, but our hope is that the…
