Nearly a fifth of workers say their workplace is toxic

 1 out of 5 employees say their place of work is very or somewhat toxic, according to a poll by the American Psychological Association (APA). The poll also found that those who reported working in a toxic environment were more than three times as likely as their counterparts in healthy workplaces to say that they “have experienced harm to their mental health” at work.  The APA’s poll found that 52 percent of people with toxic workplaces said they have experienced harm to their mental health at work, while 15 percent of those with healthy work environments said the same. N. Centre Street will be closed beginning Monday

N. Centre Street will be closed to thru traffic between Union Street and Frederick Street from 6:00 AM on Monday, July 17th to 6:00 PM on Thursday, July 20th. Signage will be in place to detour passenger vehicles around the road closure. Pedestrian traffic will also be re-routed around the construction at the intersection with Baltimore Street. Pedestrian access will be maintained to all businesses on N. Centre Street during the closure.

Assault Arrest

On July 15, 2023 officers of the Cumberland Police Department Arrested Kasim Omar Brown. During the investigation the victim stated that Brown broke the door and window as he attempted to get to the victim. Brown then grabbed the victim around the neck prior to throwing the victim against the wall. Brown was transported to the Allegany County Detention Center. Arrest: Kasim Omar Brown, age 23, Cumberland Maryland. Charges: Assault first degree, Assault Second Degree. Brown was transported to the Allegany County Detention Center and later released on $5000.00 Bond.

Arrest warrants served

On July 15, 2023 Cumberland Police Department served four arrest warrants on Shayna Cherry Fitzwater, 23, of Cumberland Maryland. As Officers attempted to serve the warrants, Ms. Fitzwater provided a false name. As a result of this, Fitzwater received an additional charge. Arrest: Shayna Cherry Fitzwater, age 23, Cumberland Maryland. Charges: Violation of probation (4), False statement/obstructing. Fitzwater is currently held without bond at the Allegany County Detention Center.

Springdale Street Morning Fire

Allegany County Emergency Services responding early this morning just after 12AM to an apartment fire on Springdale Street in Cumberland. Mineral County assisting with response sending Engines 25 and 27.  The fire was extinguished quickly to prevent it from spreading to other apartment units. No report of any serious injuries.

Mega Millions jackpot grows to $640 million

Mega Millions top prize has grown to an estimated $640 million after there was no winner. Numbers drawn Friday night were: 10, 24, 48, 51, 66 and gold Mega Ball 15. The estimated $640 million jackpot in the next drawing would only be distributed to a winner who chooses an annuity paid over 29 years. Tuesday night’s drawing is an estimated $328 million. The jackpot is the seventh largest in the game’s history. Mega Millions is played in 45 states as well as in Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Voter Accessibility Good in Allegany County

Researchers from Rutgers and the US Election Assistance Commission released a report on voter accessibility for American with disabilities. The report found that people with disabilities were more likely to vote in 2022 compared to 2018 but we also more likely to vote with a mail-in ballot.   Checking in with Diane Loibel, Board of Elections Administrator for Allegany County, she says that the county is fully accessible for those with disabilities with one exception… In the case of the Orleans voting district, Loibel says voters are notified and given alternatives that still allow them to vote…

High Visibility Speed Enforcement Begins Friday, July 14, 2023

The West Virginia Governor’s Highway Safety Program (GHSP) is teaming up with the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to remind motorists and motorcyclists to slow down and obey posted speed limits when traveling on West Virginia’s roads. Speeding is a dangerous, illegal, and aggressive behavior responsible for more than one-quarter of all traffic-related fatalities nationally and nearly one-quarter of roadway fatalities in West Virginia.   The GHSP and NHTSA are working to put an end to this unsafe and preventable driving behavior during a nationwide speed prevention campaign taking place this month. County Commissioners Again Table AES Tax Exemption

The Allegany County Commissioners have again postponed their decision on granting a tax credit for AES Warrior Run.  The commissioners tabled the request from AES for the second straight month.  County Commissioner Bill Atkinson said talks are being planned with AES.
