While House Minority Leader Jason Buckel isn't fully convinced that the recent omnibus legislation passed for election reforms does enough to cover potential voter fraud at the polls or through mail-in ballots, he does believe that allowing early vote counting for mail-in ballots by election boards to be a beneficial highlight contained within the law.

Rawlings Drug Arrest
On 04/29/2023, at approximately 2020 hours, Deputies observed a vehicle traveling southbound on Route 220, in the area of Rawlings MD, in an erratic manner. A traffic stop was conducted on the vehicle and during the course of the stop, Deputies observed several factors consistent with criminal and clandestine behavior. Probable cause to search the vehicle was developed on scene, and it was also learned that the operator was in possession of a large amount of suspected fentanyl. Gov. Justice spoke earlier this week to students about career opportunities in the state’s growing tourism industry during a visit to Nicholas County Career and Technical Center. The event marked the beginning of hospitality and tourism education programs statewide, developed as a part of a new workforce development initiative, Tourism Works. BENCH WARRANTS SERVED
On Saturday, April 29, 2023, the Cumberland Police Department served three bench warrants on Aaron Soules. Two warrants were issued as the result of Soules violating the conditions of his probation on original charges of Theft: $100 to under $1,500 and Assault-2nd Degree. The other warrant was issued due to Soules failing to appear in court on March 23, 2023 on original charges of Theft less than $100 and Resisting Arrest. Cas Taylor Remembered
Speaker of the House Cas Taylor continues to be remembered across the region following his passing on Monday at the age of 88. Dick Graham, who served as Sergeant of Arms in the House of Delegates and was assigned to Taylor for eight years of his state police career, remembers Cas as being someone everyone could relate to.
Flags at Half Staff Saturday in Maryland
The state of Maryland will lower its flags today at half staff in honor of former House Speaker Cas Taylor. Taylor’s funeral is today at 1 p.m. at St. Mary’s Catholic Church on Oldtown Road.
State Ends COVID Dashboard
It’s been over three years since COVID first struck the United States and the Maryland Department of Health has announced it is shutting down its online Coronavirus dashboard. Almost 92% of state residents have received at least one dose of a COVID vaccine.
