Phone Scam occurring in the area with regards to Jury Duty
The Allegany County Sheriff’s office is advising that there is currently a telephone scam occurring in the area with regards to jury duty. The caller identifies himself as being with the Sheriff’s office and informs the person that they have missed jury duty and a warrant is being issued for their arrest. Such calls are fraudulent and not connected with the Allegany County Sheriff’s office. Persons should not share any personal information and end the call immediately.

Two Arrested for Assault on Bedford Street
On Sunday, April 30, 2023 at approximately 5:49 PM, officers of the Cumberland Police Department were patrolling the first block of Bedford Street when they observed a physical fight in progress. Officers witnessed two males striking the victim with closed fists. Police intervened and separated those involved. The victim had sustained minor injuries. Officers identified the two male suspects as Bradley Brugnoli and Leo Rhodes. After further investigation, Brugnoli and Rhodes were placed under arrest. BENCH WARRANT SERVED
On Sunday, April 30, 2023, the Cumberland Police Department served a bench warrant on Loudon Baker III. The warrant was issued as the result of Baker violating the conditions of his probation. He was originally charged with Driving Vehicle While Impaired by Alcohol. Baker was arrested and transported to Central Booking. First Friday After Five event set for May 5th
Downtown Cumberland’s emphasis on summer entertainment is not going to let up even though Baltimore Street is in the middle of renovations this year. DDC Executive Director Melinda Kelleher spoke with WCBC on Friday and provided direction on where the first Friday After Five event will be held on May 5th on Centre Street. The new location will have ample room for enjoying the entertainment and evening in Downtown Cumberland.
Citizen input crucial for the success of Historic Preservation Plan
Ruth Davis-Rogers, Historic Planner for the City of Cumberland, is encouraging citizens to attend a meeting with consultants of the Lakota Group scheduled for 6:30pm this Wednesday at City Hall. The group has been chosen by the City to develop a new Historic Preservation Plan to serve as a guide for preservation and revitalization of historic areas and also integrate with city planning, economic development and heritage tourism and housing. Davis-Rogers says it is crucial to have citizen and property-owner input for the plan to succeed.
Public meeting of the Allegany County Board of Elections is planned for today at 5PM
A special public meeting of the Allegany County Board of Elections is planned for Monday at 5pm to hear comments on the Polling Place Consolidation Proposal. The proposal shows seven polling locations being consolidated into 3 locations within the City of Cumberland. Diane Libel of the Election Board listed those polling places being rolled into the Fort Hill High School location. Other city polling places will be consolidated in to Braddock Middle School and Allegany High School.
