State Addressing Resident Longevity

The State of Maryland is launching a multisector plan to improve services and policies supporting a growing population of older adults. Longevity Ready Maryland will encourage collaboration between state agencies, according to Governor Wes Moore, building on actions to support and provide coordinated access for older adults by consolidating and modernizing programs of assistance…      “Our plan is comprehensive and focuses on expanding access to critical care and services, promoting opportunities and optimizing health and wellness for Marylanders across their lifespan.”

Maryland Association of Counties Convention This Week

Ocean City is hosting the annual meeting of the Maryland Association of Counties, or MACo.  Officials from all of Maryland's 23 counties will be in attendance.  The Roland Powell Convention Center hosts the annual event.

Food Truck Destroyed in Mount Savage

A fire in Mount Savage early Saturday morning destroyed the Savage BBQ Food Truck.  The fire was called in shortly before 6 a.m.  Almost three dozen firefighters were engaged in extinguishing the fire.  The truck was owned by Larry Thomas Snyder and the cause is still under investigation.

CRIMINAL SUMMONS ARREST

On Sunday, August 10th, 2025, the Cumberland Police Department served a criminal summons on Chad Haas. The summons was issued as the result of a private citizen filing charges against Patterson at the Allegany County District Court. Arrest: Chad Haas, Age 53, Cumberland, Maryland. Trump Putting D.C. Police Under Federal Control

From Associated Press:  In a news conference, Trump said he’ll place the D.C. police department under federal control and deploy the National Guard. Trump said he wants to “rescue our nation’s capital from crime, bloodshed, bedlam and squalor.” The Democratic mayor of D.C., Muriel Bowser, has noted that violent crime in Washington has decreased since a rise in 2023. City Considering Naming Rights Downtown

Citizens could have the opportunity to name their favorite place to sit downtown. Cumberland is considering selling naming rights to the 17 pedestrian benches placed around the downtown in an effort to support the maintenance of the retail area. Maryland Leads in Medical Debt Protections for Patients

Maryland has some of the toughest guardrails for those facing medical debt, including preventing property liens and foreclosures. According to a new report from the Commonwealth Fund, more than 40% in the state say their debt comes from outpatient services, dentists, OBGYNs, and other billing.  Eva Stahl, with advocacy group Undue Medical Debt, says more states have been improving consumer protection in medical debt…    "Putting guardrails around payment plans and protecting people, making sure that doors are open around financial assistance at hospitals, with respect to medical debt on credit reports."

7 Arrested in Barnes Drive Fight

On August 10, 2025, at 7:51 PM, Deputies with the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a large fight involving baseball bats and knives at 15800 Barnes Drive. Upon arrival, Deputies found multiple injured victims. After the scene was secured, Emergency Medical Services were called to the location. Several individuals were transported to UPMC for treatment, and one victim was airlifted by Trooper 5 to Ruby Memorial. County Continues Work on Bel Air Issues

The Allegany County Commissioners this past week heard a brief update on changes coming to the Bel Air water system ownership.
