The deadline to file to run for political office in Maryland is less than three months away- and to date there are no candidates for the Allegany County Board of Education; just two for county commissioner; and no candidates for mayor in Cumberland. Buck Season Opens in WV
The annual buck firearms season is expected to bring thousands of hunters to West Virginia’s woodlands. The season, as is tradition, opened on the Monday before Thanksgiving. Hunters can harvest two deer on the same day but only one can be an antlered buck. Anyone who wants an additional buck must buy a stamp from the state and have additional licensing. Maryland State Police are urging drivers to be cautious and drive safely during the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, with increased enforcement planned throughout the state. Maryland Governor Larry Hogan on Tuesday announced an effort to stem violent crime in Baltimore City through an investigation into the Baltimore City State’s Attorney’s Office, emergency legislation and funding for community security. City Continues Skate Park Discussion
Efforts to develop a new skate park in Cumberland are continuing with advocates for the project updating the Mayor and City Council on the latest plans- with an emphasis on funding and location. The estimated price tag is around $450,000 with a the county, city, grants and private donations all being looked at the complete the funding package. While the group behind the project seems to have settled on Jaycees Field off of Furnace Street as the ideal site- there are some concerns. Former Pirates Player and Manager Bill Virdon Dies at 90
A World Series-winner as a player, a highly successful manager and coach after retiring and a beloved member of the Pirates organization, Bill Virdon has passed away, the team confirmed with a statement Tuesday afternoon. He was 90 years old. Although Virdon starred on that 1960 championship team, using his speed to patrol spacious center field at Forbes Field and routinely making fast and accurate throws with his arm, Virdon’s legacy included so much more. Capon Bridge in Hampshire County target of Rehabilitation
On Tuesday, Gov. Jim Justice and the West Virginia Division of Highways announced a contract for $7,166,000 to rehabilitate the historic Capon Bridge in Hampshire County. It was one of eight bridge construction, replacement or rehabilitation projects awarded from a bid letting held Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2021. Triton Construction Inc. was the lowest of three bidders for the project, which will renovate the span. The bridge carries US 50 over the Cacapon River in Capon Bridge. Embassy Theatre to hold auditions for Damn Yankees
The Embassy Theatre will be holding auditions for our 2022 production of Damn Yankees, directed by Brian Tucker with book by George Abbott and Douglass Wallop, music and lyrics by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross. Auditions will take place at the Embassy Theatre 49 Baltimore St. Cumberland, MD 21502. Auditions will be Saturday December 11th from 10 AM – 3 PM with callbacks on Sunday December 12 from 6 PM – 9 PM.
