Allegany County Tourism took home two statewide awards, the Leveraging Partnership Award and Cooperative Partnership Award, during the 40th Annual Maryland Travel and Tourism Summit in Anne Arundel County, Maryland. Induction Ceremony of the Allegany High School Chapter of the National Honor Society

Forty-four junior and senior students from Allegany High School were inducted into membership of the National Honor Society (NHS) in October in front of parents, staff, students, and guests. Honored guests included Superintendent of Allegany County Public Schools, Mr. Jeffrey Blank; President of the Allegany County School Board, Mrs. Crystal Bender; and Allegany High School Principal, Mrs. Heidi Laupert. Induction was held in the Theatre and observable via live-stream school-wide to the entire study body. ‘Viciously racist’ coverage prompts hall of fame ouster

 A regional press organization said it has removed a mid-20th century Maryland newsman from its Hall of Fame after a review of his work found writings that were racist and even promoted lynching. Edward J. Clarke, the longtime owner and editor of the Worcester Democrat newspaper on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, was inducted into the Maryland-D.C.-Delaware Press Association’s Hall of Fame in 1954. But last week, the group’s board of directors voted unanimously to terminate that honor after a University of Maryland journalism student uncovered Clarke’s editorials, The Baltimore Sun reported.  

Allegany County COVID-19 Update

The cumulative COVID-19 case count in Allegany County passed another grim milestone on Thursday, topping 10,000 cases since the beginning of the pandemic and claiming 259 lives.  Although Allegany County’s case rate has significantly decreased since September 2021 (down from 81.56 cases per 100,000 people on September 19 to 24.55 per 100,000 as of November 11), it is still double the statewide average.   The health department will continue school-based pediatric COVID vaccination clinics next week in coordination with Allegany County Public Schools to make it easier for parents to get their children age five to eleven vaccinated against COVID-19. …

UPDATE: Victim Identified in Fatal Accident

Maryland State Police are investigating a fatal pedestrian crash that occurred Thursday evening in Allegany County Shortly before 5:40 p.m., troopers from the Cumberland Barrack responded to US Route 220 north of Cedarwood Drive SW for a report of a person being struck by a vehicle. According to a preliminary investigation, a male driving a 2007 Subaru Forester was traveling south on US 220 when his vehicle struck the pedestrian, who was walking in the southbound lane. The pedestrian, identified as James Mitchell Lambert, 40, of Green Spring, West Virginia, was declared deceased at the scene. The driver was transported…

Police Serve Summons on Truancy

On November 11th, 2021, the Cumberland City Police served a Criminal Summons on Michelle Lynn Sarver, 49, of Cumberland MD. The Summons was in reference to a complaint filed by the Allegany County Public Schools. The Summons charged Sarver with Failing to send a child to school. Stolen Vehicle Reported

On November 11th, 2021, the Cumberland City Police responded to a Sylvan St address for the report of a stolen motor vehicle. Upon arrival, contact was with the owner of the vehicle who alleged he went outside to retrieve items from the vehicle and found it missing. The vehicle is described as a 2016 4 door Hyundai Elantra, red in color. The vehicle should bear Maryland registration 6EW4162. Cumberland Police request that any persons who have information regarding the whereabouts of this vehicle to contact the City Police at 301-777-1600.

Fatal Accident in Rawlings

On 11/11/21 at 5:40 PM, The Maryland State Police Cumberland Barrack was alerted of a serious collision involving a pedestrian in the area of McMullen Hwy South of the entrance to Weis Market.  Through the investigation it was learned that a 40 year old male was walking South on Rt 220 in the travel portion of the roadway when he was struck by a 2007 Subaru Forester, driven by a 31 year old male of Rawlings, MD, that was also traveling South.  Life saving measures were attempted but the pedestrian succumbed to his injuries at the scene.  Rt. 220 was…

Rutherford Holds Off on Children Vaccine Mandates

Lt. Gov. Boyd Rutherford says mandating vaccines for kids in Maryland is not the best move to make right now.  Rutherford  told WBAL that while the  topic of COVID-19 vaccine mandates has been discussed by state officials, it is not being seriously considered. DDC Discusses Construction Issues for Baltimore Street Businesses

An update provided earlier this week on how businesses along the downtown pedestrian mall will be impacted during construction on the Baltimore Street Access Project- had some store owners concerned.
