No Plans for Mandates in County

Surge or no surge, there are no plans for any COVID-19 mandates in Allegany County. The latest COVID-19 numbers released by the Maryland Health Department shows a break in the surge with hospitalizations declining and the positivity rate dipping- however that rebound hasn’t been seen to the same extent locally with Allegany County’s numbers running consistently higher than the state averages.  Since the holidays, Allegany County has shown some of the worst numbers in the state, and in some cases the worst numbers seen during the life of the pandemic. Motor vehicle crash on Industrial Blvd and Virginia Ave

As of 4AM, the downed power line has been repaired.  Industrial Blvd and Virginia Ave are re-opened and power has been restored.   The Cumberland Police investigating a motor vehicle crash on Industrial Blvd and Virginia Ave.  A vehicle struck a utility pole, causing a large power outage in the South End of Cumberland around 830PM.  As a result of the crash, Virginia Ave is closed at the Underpass.  Industrial Blvd Eastbound is also closed from Springdale St.  Motorists are encouraged to remain off the roads due to the hazardous conditions.  If you must travel, please avoid this area and find an alternative route.  

South Cumberland Crash Leads to Power Outage

The Cumberland Police are currently investigating a motor vehicle crash on Industrial Blvd and Virginia Ave.  A vehicle struck a utility pole, causing a large power outage in the South End of Cumberland.  As a result of the crash, Virginia Ave is closed at the Underpass.  Industrial Blvd Eastbound is also closed from Springdale St.  Motorists are encouraged to remain off the roads due to the hazardous conditions.  If you must travel, please avoid this area and find an alternative route.   Over 1500 customers are without service with hopes that electric will be back by midnight.

Cumberland Police Make Disorderly Conduct Arrest

The Cumberland Police responded to a residence on the 400 block of York Place for a report of a disturbance. While on scene, officers contacted David Linn Riley Jr, age 62 of Cumberland, MD. Riley was disturbing a female at that address. He was instructed to cease his behavior. After clearing the scene, they were called back two additional times for Riley. Riley was placed under arrest and charged with Disorderly Conduct and Fail to Obey a Lawful Order. NRP Officer Stops Two Suicides in Two Months

A Maryland Natural Resources Police officer prevented a suicide for the second time in two months.   On Dec. 29 at about 6:30 p.m., Officer First Class Jacob Gerczak was on patrol near the Chesapeake City Bridge when he observed a woman leaning over the safety railing of the bridge. The five-year veteran, who in October had rescued another woman after she jumped into a river, recognized the signs that she might be suicidal and turned his patrol vehicle to approach the woman. Pedestrian Struck Near Barton on US 220

A pedestrian was struck on US Route 220 near Barton Saturday evening. The Joint Communications Center of Allegany County dispatched police, EMS and fire departments to the scene at around 7:30 PM.   The road was closed in the area for about an hour and a half. We are awaiting a police report on the incident.  

Trone Tests Positive for COVID

Today, Congressman David Trone (MD-06) issued the following statement: “Today, I tested positive for COVID-19. I’m fully vaccinated and boosted, and am thankfully only experiencing mild symptoms. I’ll be voting by proxy this upcoming week so I can isolate and recuperate safely at home. My constituent service team remains available and ready to serve the folks of Maryland’s Sixth District in the meantime. City Police have busy Friday

The Cumberland Police served a Criminal Summons on Robert Parks.  The summons charged Parks with Disturbing the Peace, Harassment, and Disorderly Conduct.  Parks is awaiting trial in this matter.   The Cumberland Police served a Criminal Summons on Cliff Green.  The summons charged Green with Interception of Communication, School Trespass, and Trespass on Posted Property.  Green is awaiting trial in this matter.
