Cumberland Economic Development Corporation executive director Matt Miller provided an update this week on a request for proposals sent out last month for 19 Frederick Street, which is located across from City Hall. He said the CEDC received 21 proposals and two have gotten their attention as feasible. The proposals will be discussed at the Dec. 7 meeting of the mayor and City Council at City Hall at 6:15 p.m. One business is centered around the craft brewing industry. Maphis Bench Unveiled at Railway Station
The official unveiling ceremony of the Joe Maphis bench was held Wednesday afternoon at the Western Maryland Railway Station on the Concourse level. This memorial bench is to celebrate the life of Joe Maphis, the country music star who called Cumberland his hometown. He and his wife Rose Lee Maphis, a talented singer, guitarist and songwriter, became known as Mr. & Mrs. Country Music. UPMC Holds Ribbon-Cutting at Johnson Heights
A ribbon-cutting ceremony to unveil the region’s first UPMC Children’s Specialty Care Center was held Wednesday afternoon at the Johnson Heights Medical Building. The facility will offer: pediatric cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, nephrology, neurology, orthopaedics and pediatric diagnostic evaluations and follow up care. Allegany County COVID-19 Update
The Allegany County Health Department reports that school-based pediatric COVID vaccination clinics will continue next week. In coordination with Allegany County Public Schools, the health department began a series of after-school clinics at various schools throughout the county in an effort to make it easier for parents to get children age five to eleven vaccinated against COVID-19. Parents were sent registration links through public and private schools to schedule appointments for their children. SHA Restores Traffic Pattern on MD 51
The Maryland Department of Transportation State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) will begin work today, November 10, to restore the original traffic pattern on the MD 51 (Industrial Boulevard) bridge in Cumberland as part of the structure’s ongoing rehabilitation project. The traffic pattern switch is expected to be completed by 6 a.m. Friday, November 12. Biden Visiting Baltimore for Infrastructure Today
President Joe Biden plans to visit the Port of Baltimore to talk infrastructure today. Maryland Governor Larry Hogan has applauding the congressional passage of the infrastructure bill. Trone Introduces Bill to Protect Veterans from Fraud
According to the most recent data, over a year and a half period, the Veterans Administration staff processed 12,000 allegations of fraud- with the findings that more than 100 veteran fell victim to fraud. With more than 40,000 veterans residing in Maryland’s Sixth District- Congressman David Trone is introducing the Restoring Benefits to Defrauded Veterans Act.
