Board Presents Recommendations for Winter Sports

With the winter sports season fast approaching,  the Allegany County Board of Education approved COVID-19 guidelines to be followed. First practice sessions for winter sports begin next Monday and the first play dates are in early December. Superintendent Jeff Blank outlined the policies that will be used for masks during sporting events for both participants and spectators… He also provided the rules to be followed for extra curricular activities such as plays and performances…

Chamber Presents Business Awards

Awards for the 33rd annual outstanding business recognition dinner hosted by the Allegany Chamber of Commerce and the Western Maryland Jaycees was held last night. Master of ceremonies and Executive Director of the chamber, Julie McCoy presented this year's honorees.  The Community Service Award was presented to Delfast LLC.  Robert Strickland received the award on behalf of the McCray family.  The Business of the Year Award was presented to UPMC Western Maryland, Michele Martz, President The Entrepreneurial Spirit Award went to Donald and Kristan Carter. This year's Outstanding Young Professional Award went to Jaycees Honoree, Andrea Lowery

Hogan Calls on Senators Cardin, Van Hollen to Support Global War on Terrorism Memorial on the National Mall

As the nation prepares to honor Veterans Day, Governor Larry Hogan today urged U.S. Senators Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen to support bipartisan legislation to authorize the construction of a Global War on Terrorism (GWOT) Memorial on the National Mall. A majority of U.S. Senators—including more than a dozen Senate Democrats—have agreed to co-sponsor this legislation.

Frostburg man charged in hit, run incident

On Wednesday at 1:32 a.m., Frostburg City Police Officers responded to the 30-block of East Main Street for a report that an unknown vehicle struck and knocked over a City street lamp post, while also causing damage to a city bench, and street signs. The driver fled from the scene in the vehicle. The final estimate on the damage was nearly $7,000. Officers were unable to locate the suspect vehicle immediately after the crash but located a headlight assembly that had been knocked out of the suspect’s truck. WCI Inmate Injured

A 23-year-old inmate was admitted to UPMC Western Maryland following an altercation early Sunday evening in a housing unit at the Western Correctional Institution, according to the Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services. The inmate reportedly suffered a puncture wound to the leg and was treated at the maximum-security prison before being taken to the hospital by Cresaptown ambulance.. The 7:20 p.m. incident is being investigated by DPSCS detectives and WCI officials, according to Mark Vernarelii, spokesman for the agency.

Burlington Man Sentenced on Drug Charges

A Burlington man was sentenced Monday to 102 months of incarceration for methamphetamine distribution. Adam Michael, 39, pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute and to distribute50 grams or more of methamphetamine in July 2020. He admitted to working with others to distribute the drug between October 2018 and February 2019 in Mineral County and elsewhere

Fatal Motor Vehicle Accident in Rawlings

On Monday November 8, 2021 at approximately 4:40 p.m. a motor vehicle collision in the area of McMullen Highway, Rawlings, MD was reported to the Allegany County Joint Communications Center. Several units from numerous volunteer fire and rescue departments, Allegany Department of Emergency Services, and the Allegany County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene. Upon arrival units found that a semi-tractor trailer was involved in a motor vehicle collision with a passenger vehicle and a pick-up truck. The passenger Mrs. Martha L. Armstrong (95, of Rawlings, MD) of the passenger car was life flighted by Trooper 5 from the scene…
