Maryland’s boating season is on the horizon, and the Maryland Natural Resources Police is encouraging Marylanders to take proper precautions to ensure waterway safety and slow the spread of COVID-19. In 2020, Maryland had 155 reportable boating accidents; 64 of those accidents caused injuries and six were fatal, resulting in a total seven deaths. WV DHHR Issues Statewide COVID Update
The West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (DHHR) reports as of May 8, 2021, there have been 2,781,925 total confirmatory laboratory results received for COVID-19, with 156,001 total cases and 2,726 deaths. DHHR has confirmed the deaths of an 86-year old female from Monongalia County, a 59-year old male from Kanawha County, a 71-year old female from Boone County, a 71-year old male from Raleigh County, a 68-year old female from Kanawha County, a 73-year old female from Ohio County, and a 70-year old male from Marshall County. “Each death of a West Virginian is a loss if felt by all,” said Bill J….

Busy Friday for Police
On Friday the Cumberland Police Department served an arrest warrant on William Foster Younger. The warrant was issued by Circuit Court for failing to follow the conditions of his probation ordered by the court back in March, 2018 for an assault charged. Trone launches re-election bid
Rep. David J. Trone (D), the businessman-turned-politician who represents Maryland’s westernmost congressional district, has decided not to run for governor next year. Instead, he will seek a third term in the U.S. House of Representatives. Trone announced his decision in a media release on Friday morning. He is the second Democratic officeholder in as many days to opt not to enter the 2022 gubernatorial primary
Mineral School Board sets Calendar for 2021-2022
The Mineral County Board of Education voted this week to approve a school calendar for the 2021-2022 academic year. School system employees chose from three options and the winner received an “overwhelming” number of votes, Superintendent Troy Ravenscroft said, adding that number exceeded 300. The school year is slated to start Aug. 20 and end May 31, 2022, but the calendar is not final until approved by the state. One semester will end and the other will start at Christmas break.
WVU Won’t Mandate Vaccinations
While West Virginia University is not requiring students and faculty to get vaccinated for the coronavirus before the fall semester begins, officials are encouraging the campus community to get the doses. The fall semester will begin on Aug. 18 with the intention of operating at pre-pandemic levels for research and educational opportunities. Online classes will continue to be offered, but institution leaders wish to have as much in-person instruction as possible. Memorial marker to be revealed for 15-year-old hung near Towson jail 130 years ago
A memorial marker will be revealed Saturday near Towson jail for 15-year-old Howard Cooper, a Black teen who was lynched there over 130 years ago. In 1885, Cooper was dragged from his jail cell by over 70 masked white men and hanged from a sycamore tree next to the building. He was convicted by an all-white jury of raping a white teenage girl, but according to the Baltimore Sun, neither she nor Cooper testified that she was raped. Nearly 30% of County Residents are Fully Vaccinated Against COVID-19
On Friday, 83 people received COVID vaccinations at a walk-in clinic at the Allegany County Fairgrounds multipurpose building, which offered both the two-dose Moderna and single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccines. Additional walk-in clinics are planned at the fairgrounds on May 13 and May 20 from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 3 p.m. No appointment is necessary. Allegany College of Maryland (ACM) is awarding approximately $30,000 in summer scholarships on a first-come, first-serve basis to new and current students whose lives have been impacted or disrupted by the pandemic.
